We were up early and off by 7:30 a.m headed to Houghton Lake, Michigan via Frankenmuth - a full day of travel and sightseeing especially since our trip would take us through metro Detroit during going to work and school hours.
Oh the variety of scenery we traveled through from oil refinery storage tanks, to high rises in the downtown area, to lots of green countryside. We even saw a few trees beginning to change their color and one fully red one. Frankenmuth itself was filled with lots of gorgeous flowers along the street fronts as well as in pots and window boxes providing lots of beauty.
Our first stop was at Bronner's Christmas Store - the largest Christmas store in the world. Since the last time we were there they have added a reproduction of the chapel in Austria where Silent Night was first sung.
The grounds included a couple of large creche's
as well as 27 sign boards with the first verse of Silent Night written in all of the languages of the world
Inside we found this at the front
From there we headed over to the store which is filled with every Christmas decoration you could ever imagine
including a huge selection of nutcrackers, many many varieties of creches, all kinds of Santas, and what seemed like acres of tree ornaments with every imaginable theme. We found a tree decorated with all kinds of Detroit Tigers (the baseball team) memorabilia and a lifesized tiger as well..
and an amazing display of currency from every country in the world
The background music was of course Christmas carols so by the time we were done we found ourselves singing some of the old familiar songs giving a real lift to our day. It really is a fun place to visit but the amount of stuff truly boggles the mind.
We unhooked our car from the RV and then left our RVs in the parking lot and headed into the beautiful German town itself for lunch at the Bavarian Inn (including some accordian entertainment) and a little shopping at the huge variety of specialty stores.
We then returned to the RVs, hooked the car back up and continued on our way to the middle of the lower peninsula and our destination for the night - a campground just a mile from beautiful Houghton Lake.
It was time to relax and get a bit of rest before heading out again in the morning.
