Thanksgiving Week in Texas

Tuesday, November 22 - Monday, November 28, 2016

The Tuesday morning before Thanksgiving we were up super early to finish packing and then head for the airport in Tampa in going to work traffic.  We allowed a little more time than necessary as we'd never been there before and weren't sure just what the parking situation was and how far we'd have to then go to get to the check-in and gates.  As it was, it went quite smoothly.  There is a huge parking garage on the grounds with a monorail that then takes you to the terminals. Once you check your luggage you go directly to security and the lines were very short there so we were through very quickly.  It was then just a short walk to our gate.  By 1:00 pm Dallas time we were in Janet's car and heading out of the airport.

Since all of the children were at activities we actually had an hour or so to spend with Janet over a huge salad purchased at a local restaurant.  It was so nice to have that little bit of transition time as well as get some one on one time with Janet before the kids arrived home.  From that moment on we were constantly busy doing things with one, two or all three of them.  The weather was excellent so we could be outside and enjoying physical activities.  All three of them enjoyed playing "hockey" in the garage with a small ball,
riding their bikes, scooters and rip-stick up and down the drive around cars and following patterns they drew on the drive way; or bouncing on the trampoline in the backyard.  They really played well together taking real care to include Karsten in all that they did even though he is only 3 years old.

While Karsten was taking a nap, Anders, Dagny and I walked to the local park which is across the main street at the entrance to their sub.  Along the way we watched for acorns and pretty leaves lying on the ground.  Those we talked about using to make a centerpiece for the Thanksgiving Day meal.

At the park they had a great time playing on the equipment often looking like little spiders dashing up and down equipment like this that challenged their skills.

On Wednesday they insisted we had to go to the Timberlake Parks that they said were real close by.  HA!! Not so but they were happy and eager to share their favorite play spots so just pushed and managed to walk all the way there and back.  One park was near the entrance to the sub and the other was way back in to a path that took us through the woods to the play area.
They had fun on the equipment

Finally deciding the stones under the equipment were lots more fun for doing things like burying their legs.
Mom had to work all day in her office at the house so we spent a good deal of time out doors and then on this walk while Karsten napped.  Again we watched for pretty leaves and acorns for our centerpiece.

Thursday morning we worked on the centerpieces.  This is the one that Anders and I created.
Then Karsten and Dagny helped make this one.  Each of them had made a hand turkey the day before, and Dagny had helped draw and cut out leaves using construction paper to make more leaves. In the morning, the three of us hunted for yet more acorns to help build a base in the box to put the leaves and hand turkeys in to.
Football games, more outdoor hockey, bike riding and trampoline kept the kids busy then as Janet and I worked on the food for the day.  She brined the turkey the night before as we made apple crisp and a coconut merenige pie the night before too.  But we fixed mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans almondine, dressing, cranberry sauce, and mac and cheese per the request of the two younger children.  Jack carved as we finished the last little bit of cooking
then we could all sit down and enjoy the feast together

Unfortunately as the day progressed I went from feeling great to a scratchy throat and ultimately to sneezing and runny nose.  Darn, I'd caught a cold while on the plane.  So the energy level dropped quite a bit but we still had fun together.

Karsten loved playing with the little kitchen they have in the playroom as well as putting together some of his newest puzzles that we had sent for his 3rd birthday.  He really is quite good at fitting the pieces together.

Friday, Jorn and Juliett came for a visit with their two children.  We enjoyed pizza together and the kids had a ball playing together.  After they left, we had plenty more play time. but also an opportunity for me to guide Dagny through the process of making Boston Cream Pie Cupcakes - gluten free.  That meant first creating the gluten free flour for the recipe, then mixing the rest of the ingredients after dividing the recipe down by 2/3s thus doing a bit of math.  Once the cupcakes were finished, we had to make the pudding to stuff into them and then the chocolate frosting to put over them.  It kept us busy a good part of the afternoon and into the evening but when were done we had 8 cupcakes we could share with the family for dessert.

On Saturday we all drove over to the Gaylord Hotel to see the ice sculptures that were on display.  Each of us was given a heavy coat to wear in the 9 degree area where they were on display.  The sculptures told the story of Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

The sculptures were amazing.

At the end they had ice slides for the kids to enjoy - even Ken traveled down one of them.
At the very end they had a nativity scene all done in clear ice as well as a huge angel. Awesome!

After Karsten's nap and some more play time, we were off to see a movie at the local theater that includes a grill so you sit in the theater at long table tops, order food, and then enjoy it while watching the movie.  What a neat way to do a meal!!!

Sunday the family walked to the church, Ken and I drove over.  We had a leisurely day just enjoying playing games (I played Life several times with the kids during our time there), reading books, listening to Anders practice on his trumpet, and so forth.  While Karsten was napping Janet and I even got out to do a bit of shopping at Barnes and Nobel and Target.  By the time we were done I had all the gifts for the children for Christmas.  What a relief to have that done while there so I didn't have to mail them.  I even found time to get them all wrapped so when we left they were ready to go under the tree.

Dagny has been in a "band" playing the keyboard but didn't know how to translate that to the piano so I got stickers at Target and marked all of the basic keys with their names and then printed out a couple of songs for her to practice.

Before we knew it our time was up and we had to quickly pack bags and make a run to the airport on Monday morning right after the kids left for school.  We spent a good deal of time in the airport as the plane was late, then there were no flight attendants as they were stuck on a plane that was diverted to Austin.  We changed gates and waited some more but finally got on a plane about 4 hours later than originally planned.  Still we were on and heading home getting into the airport around  6 pm.  By the time we drove back to Zephyrhills all we wanted was a bite to eat and then bed.  Panera proved to be a good spot to stop before completing the trip home, unpacking and then crawling in.

It as a great week but it felt good to be back in our own bed!

Another Day of Quilting and Sewing

Monday, November 21, 2016
Today was a full day that included doing all the things necessary to prepare for our trip to Texas tomorrow morning.  Items had to come out of the motorhome including our luggage, clothes had to be washed, and information had to be given to people who needed it while we were gone (preparation stuff for our huge mission yard sale, church, and the memorial program all of which we've been involved in doing leg work).

But this is Monday and a day I spend a good deal of time doing sewing and quilting projects with my friend Emma Jean and a couple of others.  Emma is helping all of us learn how to sew and create some wonderful things.  Last week we were busy making our pilgrim outfits as well as our usual projects.  Today Lana was not able to make it but the rest of us were hard at work.  Emma Jean is making some cancer hats with Christmas fabric.  She is showing me how to do them too so I can make them for a friend who has had brain surgery so has had part of her head shaved.  Below she is busy cutting out a couple of the hats.
Here is Florence sitting at her brand new machine working on the T-shirt quilt she is making as a surprise for her granddaughter.  We've all been enjoying watching that process thinking one day we'll do the same
I spent time with Emma Jean working on cutting out the fabric and padding for fabric bowls I'm making for our grandchildren in Texas.  I hope to finish them yet tonight so they can go with us in the morning.  I'm working hard on them now at home in my very messy and full "everything" room that is presently overloaded with stuff that needs a home.
Here is the T-shirt quilt as it looked near the end of the sewing session.  It still needs a couple of more rows added but it sure has been exciting watching it get to this point from a stack of shirts that she brought a couple of weeks ago.

Thanksgiving Dinner: Pilgrim and Indian Style

Sunday, November 20, 2016
After worship at our RV Park church where Ken led the services (Pastor Mike preached) and we both sang in the choir, we hurried home to change into our pilgrim clothes  (Ken dressed totally in black)
and get our vegetable dish and pecan pie and then set off for the Heritage Bible Church where we were attending till ours began.

We arrived just before the services ended.  Members were sharing what they were thankful for.
Yesterday morning, Emma Jean and I were over setting up all the decorations on our table (below) as others in the congregation worked on theirs.  Each table for 8 was beautifully done in a variety of different styles.

The kitchen was decorated, too, and then filled with all the wonderful dishes provided by members for the feast of ham and turkey.  Here are a couple of the ladies doing some of the last minute set up.
The pews were pushed forward so there was plenty of room for all as they began to fill the tables.  Every place was eventually taken.
After eating, we all gathered outside for pictures.  Here are all the Indians
And then all of the pilgrims
Pastor Santiago Huron and his family then gathered for a picture.  Most chose to be Indians
Emma Jean sewed hats, collars, cuffs and aprons for she and Pat and then made hats for Lana and I while we were instructed in the making of the other items last week while sewing at her place.
What fun we had preparing and then enjoying this lovely Sunday afternoon meal and fellowship.  As a church we also provided for Thanksgiving dinner baskets for many nearby who are struggling.  Many of our leftovers also made it to their homes.

Meanwhile back in Pennsylvania, Rachel discovered that the church flowers for the worship service were dedicated to her on her 16th birthday which was a couple of days ago.  Sugar cubes on floral sticks are intermingled with the roses.
And Beth, Dean and the boys were trying to get warm after being at the Western University football game (which they won and now have a season with no losses) in snow plus high wind with temperatures in the 20s)  Bethany had a wonderful birthday celebration starting with flying to Washington DC for several meetings, two of which were in the FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) room and an evening gala

Then flying home (she saw Senator Sander Levin at the airport)
and going directly to work to find her door decorated and everyone in purple (her favorite color) eager to celebrate with her.

More Quilting Fun

Friday, November 11, 2016
After getting some exercise at the pool in the early morning, I was able to clean up and finally get to work at my sewing machine.  Wonderful!!!!!  Several projects were started but not done so it felt good completing a couple of them.

I've been making some items that will be put into gift baskets that will be given out to attendees of our Winnebago Florida State Rally in February.  A couple of years ago I took on the challenge of gathering as many items as possible for the least amount of money to create as many baskets as possible as door prizes for the rally which attracts about 200 motor homes each year.  It is my belief that winning a gift is exciting enough to encourage people to come back year after year.  It is just fun to have your name called and that can only happen if there are lots of gifts to be given.  Each chapter in Florida donates at least one basket and several do multiple ones.  Some of the vendors also supply gifts as does Winnebago itself.  Last year our chapter came through with 24 gifts!!!  Many of our members love to do handicrafts and have created some wonderful items we could put in the baskets including homemade bottles of wine, wood carved bowls, handmade greeting cards, towels with cross stitched borders, placemats, ornaments, table runners etc etc etc.  We attach cards to these items saying "made just for you by a Mid-Florida Winnie" and then included other purchased items as well to create a themed basket.

This year I've already gathered items for baskets themed for Happy Hour, Office, Dining Table, Kitchen, Travel, Leisure, Garden, Christmas, BBQ, Picnic, Cheers, Cleaning, Storage, and Game Time.  At our meeting this past week, I have even more wonderful items to put into baskets including a fabric wreath that can be hung on a door or used as a center piece.

Today I made a couple of more.  I completed a casserole carrier and a fabric cozy that you can set the casserole in before reheating it in the microwave and then use as a potholder to take it out and put it in the carrier.  These two items along with a casserole will fill one of the baskets.
Below you can see the cozy under the casserole that is sitting on the open carrier.
It is reversable so could be used with the print showing as well
Once I got these done, I was able to take time to write both the minutes and the newsletter for our Mid-Florida Winnies group and pass these along to our president as well as pictures I'd taken for the newsletter while at our outing.

This was truly a fulfilling day for me!
