Missions Wows the Crowd

Sunday, March 6 and Monday, March 7, 2016
Our missions group here at Hillcrest not only puts on two yard sales a season (December and February) to raise funds for various missions here and around the world but also creates many beautiful items that can be given to organizations.  Sunday morning we filled all three pool tables with a display of the items provided so far by the crafty ladies in the park so those attending church could see them all.  Then Sunday night we set up a display at Clubhouse 2 where our monthly meeting would be held in the morning so the entire park would have an opportunity to see all that has been done and will be distributed because of their generosity in donating material, yarn and other items.  It truly was an amazing site to see.  It was especially exciting to have it out on Monday as the park owner, John Parrish, attended the meeting and talked with us.  It gave him a chance to see how vital and generous our park is.

The table below was filled with baby clothes, baby blankets and cloth dolls in their own little blankets.  The baby clothes go to the local pregnancy center and the cloth dolls go to the Shine Hospital in Tampa so each child can have their own doll to cuddle while being treated.
At the far end of this table are over 100 chemo scarf/hats that will go to the chemo center in our local hospital so that the women can look and feel beautiful even while they have bald heads caused by the chemo.  In the middle are close to a hundred little dresses made from pillow cases that can be sent to Haiti for the little girls there. And next to that are many many cloth bags that will go to the local abused women shelter.  Each will be filled with personal care items that they will need.  And at the front end are rolled bandages that will be taken by missionaries to places like Africa while below that are all kinds of book marks and other trinkets that can be used as prizes for various Sunday Schools in the world.
Most of this table is covered with quilts and afghans that will go to the Shrine Hospital where each child is given their own blanket to use while being treated and then taken home. At the far end of the table are over a hundred knitted and crocheted scarves that will be sent to the soldiers in Afghanistan and other cold areas to be used under their head gear to help keep them warm.
There will be alot more before the season ends at the end of March but meanwhile this has been gathered and we will begin distributing what has been collected since much of this ends up filling our chair's second bedroom while waiting for a home.

At that same meeting we were able to announce how the monies made at the February sale were distributed - a total of $3,325!!!!  That was just a couple hundred less than we raised in December. So all totaled we've given close to $7,000 internationally, nationally and locally along with all of these handmade items.  Amazing what a small park of senior citizens can accomplish!!!
