Monday we received a call from our daughter Bethany who lives in Huntington Woods, MI. She was concerned about a couple of items we had stored in her basement as water was pouring in as a result of a six inch rainfall in just 3 hours.
We followed the story most of the rest of the day and the following one as we discovered many of our friends were also suffering from flooded basements as well as finding themselves stuck on streets and freeways. Some of the freeways in the area actually filled to about 10 feet of water and a couple of the pump stations broke down which meant that even by Wednesday water still remained and the freeways continued to be closed. Mud covered many of the roads once the water went down. Luckily Dean was home for the day and Beth left work early so she was able to get home. She heard from co-workers who were either stuck on the roads, in cars deep in water and had to swim to the sides of the road, or return to work and wait it out.
The stories of lost memories, furnaces, hot water heaters, special belongings were heart breaking.
Tuesday Beth, Dean and the boys spent twelve back breaking hours ripping up carpet, removing ruined items and making a first attempt at cleaning up the awful mess left behind by the flood. Unfortunately every store in the area had already sold out of bleach so that part of the job still remains plus they already know they will have to replace their hot water heater. It is tough to do all that work and not even have a way to clean up comfortably afterwards.
