A "Free" Day and Cruise on the Missouri

Tuesday, June 2, 2015
Today was what the caravan designers call - a free day.  A day when you can do anything you want.  And I think we were all ready for that after all the touring and driving we've been doing.

We finally had time to do a few little repairs like getting the chip in our windshield repaired, doing the wash, shopping for groceries and other items, getting cards and a gift to the post office, cleaning, making some necessary phone calls, working on this  blog, and just enjoying a little down time.

By late afternoon our weather radio was going off every 5 - 10 minutes announcing the weather warning of high winds, large hail and rain.  The skies started getting darker BUT we had plans so pushed ahead.  Almost the entire group had signed up for an hour and a half river boat ride on the Lewis and Clark Riverboat.  We sure didn't want to miss that!!!
So we all climbed aboard and settled at white clothed tables where we could enjoy conversation and a drink along with pizza which was provided as part of the ride.
The boat got underway and provided us with historical tidbits about the Missouri River as well as Lewis and Clark while we simply enjoyed watching the scenery and picturing what it must have been like for the Corps of Discovery as they went down this river not knowing what they'd find around each curve.  Because of the fact there is so much silt and such a swift current, the banks of the river could change overnight as could the depth of the water.  But they too would have seen all these cottonwood trees along the shoreline
and lots of birds (but not speed boats like we did)
The longer we rode the less threatening was the sky and soon we were even seeing sunshine and blue skies.  That along with the warmth beckoned us to step outside and check out the open upper deck.

And simply enjoy the beauty of the river and its surroundings
We did see a couple of intriguing things.  This sculpture of 4 eagles - each facing a different direction (here you can see 3 faces and sets of claws)
And his new water treatment "contraption" that pipes water up from 80 feet down, filters it and sends it off to homes and businesses in Bismarck
All in all, it was a relaxing opportunity to just enjoy the Missouri River.
