Mountains and Valley, into Gold Country

Friday, June 26
Our drive today from the base of Mt Shasta to Loomis took us through a few mountain passes that had us winding up and then back down long grades through some beautifully treed areas.

After we passed Lake Shasta

We found our selves in the Sacramento Valley - flat and dry.  Is it any wonder fires happen?  Look at the ground.  By 10:30 a.m. the Foulkes dash thermometer was reading 102 degrees!!
We stopped for lunch at a rest stop and found these lovely flowers despite the dead grasses from the dry and heat.
Soon we were seeing groves of olive trees.  When we went through Corning, there was a sign saying it was the "The Olive Capital"
One other thing we noticed was lots of bright green fields and large quantities of silos so obviously some sort of grain was being watered and grown.  It made quite a contrast with the dry ground around them.
We were intrigued by this very very long obviously man made ditch full of water.  It must be something created to capture rainwater and then used to water whatever the farmer was growing.
There also were fields full of what we assume were fruit trees
And along the median were huge flowering bushes - so much nicer than concret barriers
By the time we reached the Sacramento area we found ourselves on highway with 12 lanes!!!! - 6 each way and all full of cars, trucks and RVs!  When we entered the park, Bette told me their thermometer was reading 108 degrees!!!!  It is HOT!  Yes, it is dry heat but it is HOT.   We happily are in a park with some trees that help to shade us a bit.
That is the Foulke's RV to the left - it is just so shady in their spot that is doesn't show well.

This is the area where gold was discovered in the mid 1800s causing a huge rush of people to move to the area.  Tomorrow we hope to check it out.
