Jason's Band Camp Ends With Performance

Friday, August 5, 2016
We were up and off early this morning so we could enjoy breakfast at the Pancake House in Birmingham with Bill and Terri Halbert before he headed to his office.  They were just back in town after having a wonderful week at their cottage with the entire family including the newest member who was just born in June giving them now 9 grandchildren.

After we ate breakfast, we drove to Beth's home so Ken could just relax with a book while I went over to Sha Buikema's home to visit with her.  Sha was in a bad car accident a couple of weeks ago and is still trying to recover from all injuries including 4 cracked ribs and cracked sternum.  It seems like every time she recovers from one problem another hits but her wonderful reselience has once again put her on the road to recovery with her good sense of humor still intact.

Mona Russell was there visiting with her when I arrived.  What fun it was to see her after at least 30 years -- maybe more.  We had fun remembering the days of nursery school together with our kids as well as ballet recitals and of course swimming since her girls worked at the PR pool as did ours with the older girls even being the teachers for our kids.

Sha had a chance to tell us about her Bat Misvah in May when she led the entire service and had to not only give the "speech" (sermon) and read from the Torah in Hebrew.  She had been tutored for a year so she could read the Hebrew - quite an accomplishment I think!!

I had to then leave, and hurry back to Beth's place to pick up Scott and Ken so we could go to the football field where Jason's band camp has been held all of this week from 9:00 to 5:00.  They were learning all of the music and marching patterns for the up coming football season.  It has been especially tough in all of the heat and high humidity we continue to have here.   Today they were presenting all they learned to all who could come and watch.  There are 124 kids in the band and they gave a wonderful performance.  It is amazing what they have accomplished in just a few days.

This is Jason out on the field warming up

Here they are marching out from under the stands in formation

Once out on the field the 3 drum majors high step it to the front of the group to then lead the band

They played and moved around the field into various formations

And of course they played the National Anthem as they will do at the beginning of each game

Beth arrived just as they started to play having raced there from work in a pouring down rain, none of which fell in this area. Then once it was done, we returned to their house for a bite to eat and little chatting time before we headed back to our campground.

Around 7:00 we finally braved the heat and started our walk finishing with about 8,000 steps - not the 10,000 we've been doing but that would have been alot to do all at once.  We did walk a little further so as to check out the entrance area grounds to see what was set up for tomorrow.  General RV has brought in over a dozen RV's for people to check out, and huge tents were up for some of the planned activities.  We are especially looking forward to the hot air balloons that will be the focus for the Air Zoo theme which will also include a butterfly tent, birds of prey show, model airplanes and a bunch of other activities.

Tonight was the Opening night for the Rio Olympics so I was up late watching all the programming including the parade of athletes.  It is so amazing to see so many athletes in a huge variety of outfits all gathered in one place.

PS  Interestingly enough, Reilly was also on the football field today for a special event along with his team.  They were in full uniform and celebrating the beginning of a new season.  Sue posted a couple of pictures from that event.

So our two grandsons entering their sophomore years are both preparing for football season though in two different ways.  Meanwhile our other sophomore, Rachel starts the new swim season of practicing next week.
