Today we retraced some of the path we traveled a couple of days ago as we set off for Visalia which is near Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Tomorrow will be our day to visit them.
So we again went over the long winding and twisting Tejon Pass with an elevation of 4,183 feet and through the Angeles National Forest.
Through the very flat valley floor with all of its green patches of fruit and nut trees
acres and acres of grape vines (some of which were being picked)
and sent off to the market for you and I to eat (table grapes) as evidenced by this truck load
and many more were just getting planted
or being grown for various types of wine
There were fields of vegetables including corn
Much of which we suspect was being used to fatten cattle before they were sent to the slaughter house. Especially since we saw feed lots near some of those fields of corn
And of course there was hay - in fact it was being cut and baled as evidenced by these pictures
We also saw these signs which certainly speak to the severe drought out here
and there were other signs that said No Water = No Jobs.
One other thing we enjoyed was the beauty of the median strips especially along Hwy 99-oleander bushes of white and pale and bright pick blossoms grew so tall most of the time we couldn't even see the traffic headed south.
This is a picture of us going down the road that Bette took while following us
Once we arrived and got set up at Country Manor Mobile Home Community in Visalia,
Frank and Bette tackled their wash while Ken and I visited COSTCO to pick up some items we use regularly and to fill our car gas tank. There was a huge difference in cost. There the gas was $2.99.9 while at the local stations it was running more like $3.69.9. The prices are definitely high out here. On the other hand, the diesel for our RV is actually cheaper than the gas sometimes by as much as $.50 per gallon.
Our car has gathered dirt from all its travels with us behind the wheel as well as just riding behind the motor home as a toad, so we took it to a car wash and got it all vacumned out and cleaned up inside and out. It felt so good to ride back to the campground in it!!!
Tomorrow we'll leave early and head for the two National Parks which are over 40 miles away.
