Beth and Dean are enjoying a four day visit to Mackinac Island while we hold up the fort in Huntington Woods. That meant we needed to pack a suitcase this morning and close up the motorhome.
Then we were off to Algonac High School to watch our grandson, Jason, in his cross country meet. We were totally unprepared for what we discovered. This was not just a couple of teams competing - it was 32 invited teams from the entire SE Michigan area with over 1100 participants!!!!!! WOW what a lot of kids in shorts running around in very cool weather. (It was 46 when we got up this morning and drizzling but warmed up a little with some little patches of blue sky) The picture below shows not only the blue sky we had for a short time but the string of canopies - one for each school and lots of kids moving about.
There were eight 5K races - 4 girls and 4 boys - Division I groups and Division 2,3,4 groups - Varsity, JV and Middle schools
The Junior Varsity Boys ran the very last race as the drizzle began anew. Two hundred and ninety-seven boys!!! (The whole schedule was off by an hour because they ran into a problem with bees just before everything was due to start and spent and hour dealing with that.) Below you can see Jason in the middle of the pack about half way through the 5K race.
For the very tail end of the race they emerged out of the woods onto the track. Below is Jason coming out of the last turn
Awards were presented to the top 40 runners in the two girls varsity divisions and boys divisions. Then plaques were presented to the top three school teams - girls division and boys division. The Berkley girls took second!
The Berkley boys came in fourth. BUT the winner of the Division I varsity boys race was a Berkley boy so the entire team was walking on air because of how well they had done.
By the time the coach had talked with them afterwards it was pushing 3:00 so we made a stop at the Bayside Bar and Grill just a couple of miles from Algonac High School. While the skies were grey it was still a neat spot to sit and enjoy our meal as we had a lakeside table where we could get a beautiful view of Lake St. Clair.
