We are settled for the night at a very nice campground in Danville, MO - Lazy Day Campground - after over 300 miles of travel along I 70.
By midmorning of our travels, we had crossed the state line and entered Missouri but little changed otherwise. We were still seeing lots of rolling hills, green grass and trees, some fields of corn and wheat and an occasional herd of cattle grazing.
What we haven't seen is large patches of sunflowers which I did expect to see in this area - especially Kansas. We stopped at a rest stop where there was a shop of "Kansas mementos" and everything had a sunflower on it. Instead we are just enjoying this picture of a field of them in Texas that are friends Bob and Glenda Christian sent us today after they drove past it.
I enjoyed some time in the pooltonight and chatting with a couple from the area. They were telling there was so much rain farmers either weren't able to get crops planted in a timely manner or what they did plant got water logged. It seems so strange to hear this after all the drought we've experienced in the West. Truly our country seems to have been overwhelmed with water or not gotten enough. No happy mediums. We received an email today about the floods in the Dallas area that still have not completely receded after all the May and June rains. The campground we use to stay at while visiting our kids is still under water!!!!
We also saw postings of the awful tornado that hit Glen Arbor, MI including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. Trees are down everywhere and it is presently impassable. I think it is next week that our daughter Beth and her family were due to go there for their vacation. Sad to hear of the destruction.
